It is said that the earliest know skirts date back to 3900BC and were worn by men and women in Armenia. Throughout history there have been many adaptations of the skirt in different cultures. From the short skirt Miao tribe to the upper class women in the Middle Ages, the skirt has been a staple in a women’s wardrobe.
In today’s society there are so many different types of skirts; pencil, tube, skater and maxi; just to name a few. Designers are becoming increasingly creative with different styles such as angled and asymmetrical hems. We have so many to choose from that it’s no wonder we have such a hard time in the mornings picking an outfit for the day!
In this post I thought I would talk about skirt lengths and how or when to wear them...
Let’s start at the top and work our way to the bottom!
Micro Mini: Feeling scandalous? Then this is the skirt for you... This length exposes your thighs and lower portion of your butt, under garments will definitely be on display! Those of you who are lucky enough to have the pins or brave enough(not me) to pull off a micro mini should only wear these in appropriate situations (possibly in the comfort of your own home). I would suggest not wearing these to work unless it is a mandatory uniform... This length is super flirty so beware!
Mini: Slightly more tamed than its salacious sister the micro, this length shows off most of your thighs and usually is no longer than 10 cm below the butt. Its popularity peaked in the 1960's and is still very popular among teens and young adults today! I love pairing a mini with a button up top (tucked in) with a big statement necklace and boots. Also looks great with a cropped top as you could see in my previous blog post for Valentine’s Day Outfit ideas. Minis are great for a night out with a nude pair of heels to elongate your legs.
Above knee: We are moving further down the thigh now to just above the knee. This length to me is getting more into the business side of things. This is a great length to wear to the office, pencil skirts look great on every shape and you can tuck blouses in or leave them out ( I prefer tucked in). Whether you wear heels or flats to work this length is flattering.
Knee: There is only really a couple of centimeters difference between above knee and knee length skirts so I am not going to re write what I have above. Having your skirt cut at the knee can also draw people’s eyes to the smallest part of your legs and make them appear thinner! Winning!!
Cocktail: Now we are getting back to having some fun with the length of skirt... Cocktail is a fantastic length for classy or fancier parties (cocktail optional). If you are going to a race day such as Melbourne Cup this is perfect because it’s not too short but not too long that you will be stepping on the ends of your skirt.
Midi: Now let’s time travel to the 1970's when the midi skirt was popular. I am a huge fan of this length because you can dress it up or dress it down. They are the perfect length for weddings or other semi formal occasions; or for lazy Sundays on a picnic with a muscle tee tucked in.
Maxi: When I see a maxi skirt all I can think of is summer time. When your skin is brown and your hair is blonde from the sun. Maxis have a super relaxed vibe to them and they are perfect for casual occasions. They can be confused with floor length skirts which are more for formal settings (we will talk about them soon). Maxis usually sit just above your ankle but of course if you are shorter you might find they come down and may cover your feet.
Formal/Evening: Now we have reached the bottom! Formal/ evening wear is almost always floor length. Every girl should have something that is considered formal for those occasions (they happen so often) that one would need a floor length gown (did you detect the sarcasm?) It’s not like it doesn't happen; my boyfriend has sprung a formal event on me with minimal time to organise an outfit in the past. The skirt doesn't have to be expensive but it’s always good to keep your bases covered.
I hope that this post makes it easier for you to navigate the confusing world of skirt lengths.
Please leave suggestions for other blog post in the comments below and tell me what length skirt is your favourite and how you like to style it!
